SI.com Ranks Terps 17th in Nation

May 21, 2007

The University of Maryland was 17th among all Division I universities in the nation recently in SI.com's All Sports Ranking system.

The SI.com rankings are calculated by giving points for reaching the Top 25 in 19 different sports: men's and women's tennis, lacrosse, cross country, soccer, basketball, water polo, volleyball and hockey, along with women's softball, men's baseball and football. The top ranking receives 25 points, with the 25th-ranked team receiving one point.

Unlike the United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup rankings, the SI system gives more weight to football and basketball. The top-teams in those rankings get 50 points, with the No. 25 school getting 25 points.

Maryland was tied for 17th with Oklahoma and Rutgers. The Terrapins were the fourth ACC school listed, including No. 1 North Carolina, which has fielded top-10 teams in eight different sports. Duke was 10th and Virginia was 11th.

The final rankings will be determined at the end of the spring championship seasons.
