POSITION TITLE: Media Relations Coordinator
DEPARTMENT: Intercollegiate Athletics
CATEGORY: Contingent I, Hourly
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Media Relations Coordinator will manage the day-to-day administrative operations of the Media Relations Office and will serve as the primary contact for media credentials, sports information materials and special-event coordinator, to include catering. This individual will provide positive, effective reception functions for the office, as well as maintaining and ordering stocks of office supplies. The successful candidate will be the office's liaison with campus dining services to ensure quality catering support at selected games and at news conferences. This individual will be responsible for supervising, training and delegating work assignments to student workers and volunteers. They will coordinate media credential requests during football and basketball season, as well as assisting with proofreading and editing of printed material. They will also direct game-day support services for football and some men's and women's basketball games, as well as performing other duties as assigned.
The potential exists to serve as a primary media contact for one or more of Maryland's 27 intercollegiate sports. This would involve writing press releases for pre-game and post-game activities, providing game-day media operations, assisting with publication design and maintenance of the umterps.com web site for assigned sports.
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree preferred with at least one to two years of experience in a professional office setting. Knowledge of sports is essential, as is a proven ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented setting. Strong oral and written communications skills are vital. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Access and Internet Explorer are required, with other computer knowledge being preferred. Candidates who could serve as primary media contacts should also have proven writing and editing ability and considerable knowledge of one or more specific sports.
REQUIREMENTS: Position will require some weekend and evening work at football and basketball games. Candidate must be willing to work in a smoke-free setting.
SALARY: Hourly with some overtime available. Contingent I position with no benefits available.
