Terrapin Invitational Tournament Central
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The top-ranked field hockey Terps host the annual Terrapin Invitational Sept. 8-9, with No. 12 American, Ohio State and Northeastern visiting for the weekend. The tournament begins with Maryland playing the Buckeyes at 11 a.m. on Saturday, followed by the Eagles and the Huskies at 1 p.m. Both of Maryland's games will be broadcast by WMUC Sports, while Saturday's game can be watch on the internet at www.ACCselect.com.
Sunday's schedule begins with American and Ohio State clashing at 1 p.m., followed by the Terps and Northeastern at 3 p.m. Live stats are also available for all four games this weekend. Links are available at www.umterps.com.
In its 11th year, it is the first appearance for Ohio State and Northeastern in the Terrapin Invitational. Maryland has never lost a game in the tournament, which dates back to 1996 and has been played every year except 2000. American has also participated in the tournament in all but one season.
Led by ACC Player of the Week freshman Katie O'Donnell (Blue Bell, Pa.), the Terps enter the Terrapin Invitational with a 4-0 record on the season, picking up three wins last week, including two over ranked opponents. They lead the all-time series over Ohio State, 4-0. The last meeting was a 2-1 Maryland win in Columbus, Ohio. OSU visited College Park in 2003. It had been their first trip back since 1979. The Buckeyes, who come into the weekend at 2-3, are coached by 12th-year head coach Anne Wilkinson, who was a teammate of 20th-year Maryland head coach Missy Meharg at the University of Delaware.
Maryland leads the series against Northeastern, as well. In what will be the first meeting between the teams since 1995, the Terps have won five times, while the Huskies have claimed three wins. The teams have also tied three times. One of Maryland's wins was a 3-1 decision in the national semifinals in 1995. Northeastern has split its only two games this season, losing at Northwestern in the opener, 2-1, in overtime, but bounced back to defeat Ball State, 4-1, last weekend.
The Terps will travel to American in two weeks on Wednesday, Sept. 19.
Admission and parking are free for all regular-season field hockey games at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The field is also serving as the host for the NCAA Championship on Nov. 16 and 18. Tickets are currently for sale at the Terrapin Ticket Office.
