CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of Maryland softball team lost to #22/24 North Carolina Saturday afternoon, as Danielle Spaulding's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning dropped the Terps to 22-7 on the season and 0-3 in ACC play. In the first game, the Tar Heels (27-6-1, 5-1 ACC) hit back-to-back home runs in the second inning to propel them over Maryland, 5-1.

The Terps struck in the first inning of the second game against UNC starter Faith Sutton, as senior Jenny Belak scored when Sarde Stewart's single was misplayed in the outfield. It was Belak's 99th run scored, tying her for fifth all-time.

In the fourth inning, Maryland's Alex Schultz singled to advance Devon Williams to second base. In her first career at-bat, Lauren Ghent's sacrifice bunt was misplayed, loading the bases with one out. Belak singled in Williams to give the Terps a 2-1 advantage. With her five hits today between the two games, Belak now has 192 in her career and is only 20 shy of the all-time mark set by Kelly Shipman.

North Carolina's Lisa Norris pinch hit in the sixth inning and hit a home run to center field to tie the game at two. Jennifer Jacobs double to left center to set up Spaulding's game-winning hit.

Sarah Dooley (9-6) took the loss for the Terps and Amber Johnson (6-1) pitched three innings of relief to record the win for UNC.

In the first game, senior Sarde Stewart launched her fourth home run of the season over the left-center field fence for the Terps' only run. Stewart now has 22 RBI to lead the team.

North Carolina had back-to-back home runs by Whitney Allen and Spaulding in the second inning to lead their offense. Norris pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts for the win. Maryland starter Meredith Nelles (9-1) took the loss allowing four runs in 3 2/3 innings.

The Terps will return to ACC action on Friday as they play host to Virginia Tech in a three game series starting at 5 p.m.
