Terps Gymnasts Go Green

Oct. 27, 2009

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - On October 11, the University of Maryland's gymnastics team took part in the Green Festival, an event to support a socially just and sustainable economy. The Terps were surrounded by over 300 green businesses supporting the cause and promoting recycling awareness.

The team boarded the metro and arrived at the convention center where they were provided with their "green team" shirts. After an explanation of differences in kinds of recyclable plastics, the team was split into two and were stationed at recycling centers throughout the site. They put their knowledge to use as they educated the attendees on the differences between composting, recycling, and other forms of trash.

Volunteering at the event allowed for the athletes not only to learn a lot composting and recycling, but also the opportunity to learn a lot about themselves. As confirmed by freshman, Ally Krikorian: "It changed my perspective on what I throw away and how I can help change the world just by simply putting plastic or any other article into a recycle bin or its proper bin." The tumblers would love to return to the event, described as an "unexpected great time" by junior, Abigail Adams.
