Spring Football Report: Practice No. 12

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland football team geared up for next week's annual Red-White game by holding its second spring scrimmage Saturday at Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium.

Last week's scrimmage featured a dominating performance by the defense (four interceptions/eight sacks), but the offense rebounded with a number of big plays Saturday, including three receiving touchdowns and a 96-yard kickoff return for a score by Torrey Smith.

Sophomore Jamarr Robinson made a case for the No. 2 quarterback position by completing 15 of 19 passes for 253 yards and four touchdowns, the final two to Smith.

Robinson, who completed his last 12 passes, led the second team on a short TD drive after Drew Gloster's interception stopped an early possession for the No. 1 offense. Three plays into a drive that started on the 20, Robinson hit Kerry Boykins on a 20-yard touchdown pass.

"Jamarr threw the ball better and made some plays today and I thought he did a better job in the running game," head coach Ralph Friedgen said.

It looked like the defense was in for another runaway after DB Jamari McCollough picked off Chris Turner and rambled in for a 35-yard touchdown on the fifth possession of the scrimmage, which featured four 12:00 quarters.

However, Smith gave Terp fans a flashback to the Humanitarian Bowl when the sophomore hauled in Nick Wallace's kickoff at the 4-yard line and raced up the right sideline for a touchdown.

Smith was one of three receivers who had impressive numbers. He had five receptions for 92 yards and Adrian Cannon had three catches for 132 yards, including a 53-yard touchdown from Turner.

Redshirt freshman WR Kevin Dorsey continued an impressive spring with four catches for 79 yards, including a 17-yard scoring catch from Robinson.

Turner completed just 9 of 25 passes and threw three interceptions, but he had 154 passing yards and two touchdowns.

"The offense made good plays and I thought Adrian Cannon really stepped up and had a big day," Friedgen said. "I thought Chris Turner played better and I thought Jamarr Robinson played better. I also thought Morgan Green ran hard."

Overall, Saturday's scrimmage was a step in the right direction for the Terps.

"I thought the teams competed very well against each other today, it was a very aggressive scrimmage," Friedgen said. "I thought the offense made some plays, but they are still turning the ball over way too much. On some of the plays it wasn't the offense it was just our defense making plays."

Cameron Chism was one of the defenders making plays. The sophomore, looking to make a push for time at cornerback, had a team-high 11 tackles, including two for a loss.

DB Kenny Tate had seven tackles, including five solo stops, and LB Adrian Moten had four tackles, including two for a loss and one sack. He also picked off Turner once on a tipped ball.

There was a scary moment on the opening possession of the scrimmage.

RB Da'Rel Scott and DB Nolan Carroll were involved in a violent collision on a run up the middle. Carroll went low to tackle Scott and his helmet collided with Scott's knee.

Scott ended up with a knee strain, but Carroll was down on the field for about 10 minutes. He was immobilized by the training staff and taken to the hospital.

"Nolan Carroll had full use of his arms and legs, but he had pain in his neck so we had to be cautious," Friedgen said immediately after the scrimmage. "He is experiencing concussion symptoms so he might be done for the rest of the spring. Hopefully he will be back."

Carroll had x-rays later in the day and the results were negative. He is expected to make a full recovery, but will spend the night in the hospital as a precaution.

Scott is likely to miss the rest of the spring.

"Dr. (Craig) Bennett thinks that Da'Rel Scott has a grade 1 ACL (strain)," Friedgen said. "So in two to three weeks he should be ok."

Friedgen likes what he's seen so far from his team after 12 spring practices.

"This team works hard and I very rarely have to get on them about effort, or a lack of desire to do something," Friedgen said. "So we have to keep working and like I told them, `we have three more practices so we have to make the most of them.' Most of the time when it gets around eight or nine practices left they start looking to the end and I haven't see this team do that."

The Terps are off until Tuesday when they will hold their 13th practice of the spring. The team will practice at 10 a.m. at the on-campus facility and have another workout Thursday (10 a.m.).

Those will be the final practices before the Red-White Spring Game which is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Saturday in Byrd Stadium.

The team will hold an autograph session at 12:30 p.m. as part of the Maryland Day activities, a campus-wide celebration.

    Terp Notes:

Practice Notes: Defensive linemen Travis Ivey (concussion) and Masengo Kabongo (ankle) were among those missing the scrimmage ... junior Morgan Green, who is battling for the No. 2 tailback job, had a team-best 61 rushing yards on six carries, including the longest and most impressive run (47 yards) of the day. Green broke through the middle of the line, ran over one defender and then carried Kenny Tate a number of yards in the secondary before finally being pulled down ... Nick Wallace and Mike Barbour continue to battle for the place-kicking chores. There was only one official field-goal attempt in the scrimmage, but the Terps simulated three-point tries on the PATs. Barbour went 2-for-3, including a 41-yarder, and Wallace was good on 3 of 4 attempts, including a 48-yarder.
