Hunt Leads Team to Best Finish in Three Years

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Maryland women's golf team concluded the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference championship tournament with a 915 (299-305-311), good for sixth place. Senior Carly Hunt who tied for 16th, led the Terps to their best finish at the tournament in three years. Maryland's first round score was the best performance at the tournament for the program since the 2004 carded a 290 on the final day of competition.

Last season Maryland finished seventh with an 89-over-par 941. They improved by almost 30 strokes this time around. The Terps earned a sixth place finish in 2007 when the tournament was played at the Carmel Country Club in Charlotte, N.C.

Wake Forest held on to their crown to be named ACC Champions for the second straight year with a 17-over-par 869. The Demon Deacons' own Michelle Shin was the individual medalist turning in a two-under-par 211. Virginia came in second (873), Duke third (874), Florida State fourth (901) and North Carolina fifth (906). Filing in behind the Terrapins were N.C. State in seventh with a 75-over-par 927, Miami in eighth with a 113-over-par 965 and Boston College in ninth with a 135-over-par 987.

One the first day the Terrapins were in the first group to hit the course. They carded a 15-over-par 299 and were led by Hunt who registered a one-over-par 72 to tie for eighth. The Berwyn, Pa., native birdied three holes that day to stay afloat. Teammates sophomore Jessica Hollandsworth and freshman Christine Shimel also ended Day 1 in the top 20, tying for 15th with scores of 74.

The second round of play saw Hollandsworth take the lead from Hunt after she carded a birdie and an eagle in the first five holes. Shimel and Hunt were tied for 16th at the end of the day with an eight-over-par 150.

Freshman Hayley Brown improved her game on Day 2 by taking four strokes off her score for a six-over-par 77. Junior Kerri Connolly turned in a 79 on the first day and an 82 in the second round.

Four Maryland golfers finished in the fields top 30. Just behind Hunt was Shimel tying for 19th. The Kennett Square, Pa., native carded six birdies and gave a 15-over-par 228 performance in her first ever ACC tournament. Hollandsworth earned a top-25 finish tying for 22nd with a 229 (74-74-81). Only five eagles were recorded in the entire three-day tournament, Hollandsworth had one of them on Day 2.

Connolly saw improvement on the final day of competition, shaving seven strokes off her score. She tallied a four-over-par 75 and concluded play with a 236 and tying for No. 28. Brown rounded out the competed Terrapins with a 31st place finish and score of 243. This was also Brown's first trip to the post season.

ACC teams will now await selections for NCAA Regionals which will be held May 6-8, 2010.
