Sophomore Jessica Hollandsworth and freshman Christine Shimel were named to the 2010 All-ACC Women's Golf team announced the league office this morning. It is the second consecutive post-season nod for Hollandsworth.
This season Hollandsworth earned her second career tournament title at the Palmetto Intercollegiate, using a career-low round 68 which pushed her in to first place. She earned five top-10 finishes and leads Maryland with an average score of 74.52 after competing in 27 rounds. The Floyd, Va., native led the Terps in four tournaments this year and never finished outside of the top-25.
Teammate Shimel claimed two second place finishes this year as a freshman, and five top-10 finishes. She carded a career low-round 68 at the Pinehurst Challenge during the second round and went on to take earn her first top-5 finish of her career coming second place. The first -year player out of Kennet Square, Pa., is second on the team in scoring average with a 74.61, which also ranks third in the Maryland single season average record books. Shimel finished outside of the top-30 just once and led the team in three tournaments this year including at the team's first place finish at the Canes and Cardinal Classic and Pinehurst Challenge. When Shimel was in the top-10, Maryland finished in the top-5 every time.
Between Hollandsworth and Shimel, they helped Maryland collect top-10 finishes in all tournaments played, six of those in the top-5.
Atlantic Coast Conference Champion Wake Forest placed two players on the team, as well as capturing Coach of the Year honors for Dianne Dailey, as selected by the league's nine head coaches. The Demon Deacons were represented by freshman ACC medalist winner Michelle Shin and sophomore Cheyenne Woods. Shin captured medalist honors with a two-under-par 211 and became the first freshman to win the individual honor since Duke's Amanda Blumenherst captured the title in 2006.
Duke, Florida State and Virginia placed two players each on the team. Duke was represented by ACC Player and Freshman of the Year, Lindy Duncan and senior Alison Whitaker, who made her third appearance on the All-ACC team. Florida State honorees included senior Lacy Agnew and junior Macarena Silva, their first such honors. This is the first time Florida State has placed two members on the team since 2004, when Caroline Larsson and Katie Quinney were selected. Virginia was represented by a first-time honoree, freshman Brittany Altomare and junior Calle Nielson, earning her third-straight accolade.
North Carolina and Boston College rounded out the 12-member team with one selection each. North Carolina sophomore, Catherine O'Donnell earned her second straight All-ACC accolade. Boston College placed its first honoree on the All-ACC team since joining the league in 2005 with sophomore Eunice Yim.
Duncan becomes the first Duke player to win both ACC Player and Freshman of the Year honors, since Duke's Amanda Blumenherst captured those honors in 2006.
