GREENSBORO, N.C. -
Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Melissa Vassalotti of the Maryland field hockey team has been named the ACC Field Hockey Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
She led No. 3 Maryland (11-1, 4-0 ACC) to a 2-1 win at No. 8 Duke (8-5, 2-2 ACC) Saturday. In the win over the Blue Devils, she notched seven saves - one shy of her career high. After the Terps took a one-goal lead with just under 10 minutes remaining, Vassalotti notched three of her saves in the final 8:15 to preserve the win.
The weekly award is the first of Vassalotti's career and the fourth of the season for Maryland. Jemma Buckley, Maxine Fluharty and Jill Witmer have also been honored by the league this year.
The Terrapins will play host to No. 1 Old Dominion (14-0) Friday at 6 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The Monarchs dealt the Terps their only loss so far this season on Sept. 2 in Norfolk, Va.
Admission for Friday's game is free and parking for fans will be free in the lots surrounding the Complex after 4 p.m. After the Terps-Monarchs game, the Maryland men's soccer team will be playing Duke at 7 p.m. at Ludwig Field. At 9:30 p.m., the annual Maryland Madness event will be taking place at Comcast Center.
