Terps 11th in Directors' Cup

CLEVELAND - The University of Maryland is currently in 11th place in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings midway through the winter sports season.

Maryland currently has 506 points in the Division I standings, including 233 points in the winter and 273 in the fall. Stanford leads the standings with 902 points, followed by Ohio State (772) and Penn State (740.75).

The Terrapins scored points in five winter sports this season, based on their finish in NCAA Championships. Maryland got 50 points for its finish in women's basketball, 56 points for an 18th-place finish in wrestling and 52 points after finishing 22nd in women's swimming and diving.

The Terps also scored in women's indoor track and field (45.5 points for a tie for 28th) and men's indoor track and field (29.5 points for a T44 placing).

Maryland earned 100 points for its NCAA national championship in field hockey during the fall of 2010. The Terps also scored in the fall in men's soccer (T5th, 73 points), women's soccer (T17th, 50 points) and football (24th in final USA Today poll, 50 points).

North Carolina (4th, 717), Florida State (5th, 670.5), Duke (6th, 639.5) and Virginia (18th, 469.5) join Maryland to give the Atlantic Coast Conference five teams in the top 20.

The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports - 10 women's and 10 men's.
