COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Three members of the 2010 NCAA and ACC champion Maryland field hockey team were named to the Preseason All-Atlantic Coast Conference Team the league announced Tuesday. Megan Frazer, Harriet Tibble and Jill Witmer were all voted to the team by the league's six head coaches.
Maryland will open the season No. 1 in the 2011 Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I Preseason Poll. The Terps have been the preseason No. 1 team in two of the last three years. The top-ranked Terrapins will face 12 of the preseason top-20 teams and they will open this season with 2010 NCAA Tournament team, No. 19 Boston University Friday at 2:30 p.m. in Philadelphia.
The Terrapins, who have won the last three ACC titles and nine overall, were picked to finish second in the ACC. They received 22 points and two first place votes. Last year's ACC and NCAA runner-up, North Carolina, received four first place votes and 24 overall points.
Virginia was chosen to finish third, while Duke, Wake Forest and Boston College rounded out the predicted order of finish standings.
Maryland and North Carolina were the only teams to land three student-athletes each on the Preseason All-ACC Team.
Frazer, who will serve as one of the team's captains this fall, and Witmer were selected as NFHCA All-Americans last season. Frazer scored the game-winning goal in double overtime for the NCAA title over North Carolina last November.
Witmer was named ACC Rookie of the Year. She finished the season fifth in the league in goals scored with 24 and fifth in points on the year with 41.
Tibble earned All-American honors from womensfieldhockey.com and was named to the All-ACC Team. In the 2010 national championship game, she scored the first goal of her career with 7:25 remaining to tie the game at two. She will enter the 2011 season as one of the Terrapins' strongest defenders.
The Terrapins open the 2011 season Friday with their game vs. Boston University in the Conference Cup, hosted by Temple University. The Terps will play tournament host Temple Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in Philadelphia. Live stats for both games will be available
