COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The national champion Maryland field hockey team was honored at halftime of the men's basketball game vs. North Carolina.
The Terrapins won their fifth NCAA title in seven years (2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011) when they beat No. 1 North Carolina 3-2 in double overtime in Louisville, Ky. in November. The unseeded Terps trailed by two with less than four minutes remaining when Meharg pulled their goalkeeper for an extra field player. Freshman Katie Gerzabek scored seconds later to pull Maryland within one, then senior Jemma Buckley sent the game into overtime with a goal off a penalty corner with the clock at zero. Meharg subbed in sophomore Jill Witmer in the 82nd minute, who took off down the field and scored for the win.
Maryland beat No. 2 Old Dominion, 4-0, in the NCAA Semifinals. The Monarchs took both earlier meetings, outscoring the Terrapins 9-3 in them. To get to the NCAA Semifinals, the Terps beat third-seeded Syracuse 3-2 in overtime in College Park.
