COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The football team held its third annual 'Lift for Life' fundraising event Saturday morning as part of the Maryland Day activities.

The Terps spent about 45 minutes on the team's practice field running through four different drills - the 10-yard tire flip, the cone drill, the prowler push and move the mountain - in order to raise money to fight cystic fibrosis.

The Maryland Chapter of Uplifting Athletes chose to help fight cystic fibrosis, a rare disease that affects near 30,000 Americans. Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic rare disease that affects the lungs and digestive system by producing unusually thick mucus; the condition can clog the lungs and lead to a life-threatening lung infection and can obstruct the pancreas and stop natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.

The chapter's goal is to raise awareness and funding for cystic fibrosis and donate any contributions made to the Boomer Esiason Foundation for cystic fibrosis research.

"We're just trying to do whatever ever we can to give back," Maryland offensive lineman Justin Gilbert said. "There are a lot more people less fortunate than we are."

Gilbert, one of the organizers of the event, was "thrilled with the support."

As of Saturday, the team has pledges of more than $14,000. Last year, the Terps raised roughly $9,000.

According to Jaime Fettrow, a spokesperson for Uplifting Athletes, Maryland is one of nine schools involved with the project. Those schools have raised over $1 million since 2003.

Immediately following the Lift for Life event, the team took part in an autograph session on the concourse of Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.
