Rising seniors Hayley Brown and Christine Shimel have been named to the 2012 National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Division I All-American Scholar Team, the association announced Friday. It is the third consecutive season Brown and Shimel have been selected for the team.
Brown, a business major, competed in eight tournaments for the Terps this past season. The native of Newmarket, Ontario, led Maryland to a second place finish at the Palmetto Intercollegiate in October. Brown carded a career-low 67 in the third round to finish with a personal-best 219 (78-74-67) and place seventh.
Shimel, a marketing major, finished second on the team in scoring this year. In 11 events, the Kennett Square, Pa., native averaged a 74.88 per round and tallied four top-10 finishes. At the Lady Pirate Invitational in October, Shimel carded a season-low 217 including a career-low 68 in the second round to help the Terps capture the tournament title for the second consecutive year.
To be eligible for consideration for the NGCA Division I All-American Scholar Team, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50.
