A two-time All-American with the Terps and 1996 Olympian with the U.S. National Team, Kate Kauffman enters her fourth season as an assistant coach on Missy Meharg's staff. The Honda Award finalist who captained the Terrapin backfield during her tenure will help train Maryland's young, talented defense in 2001 while continuing her eight-year involvement with America's squad.

“Kate and the Kauffman family have been involved with Maryland hockey for nearly a decade,” said head coach Missy Meharg. “As an Olympian and accomplished player, it is an honor knowing that she could probably have any coaching job that she wants but stays involved with the Terrapins.”

On the international level, Kauffman is the most honored athlete in Terp hockey history. She has been involved with the national program since 1995 when she helped the U.S. to a bronze medal at the Champions Trophy in Mar del Plata, Argentina. After the Atlanta games Kauffman traveled with the 1997 national team to the Champions Trophy in Berlin, Germany, and the 1998 World Cup in the Netherlands. In 1999 she helped lead the U.S. to silver medals at both the Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada, and the Sydney International Hockey Challenge in Australia. An incredible honor came as Kauffman was named 2000 U.S. Field Hockey Athlete of the Year after the national team participated in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in England. She most recently helped the U.S. to a silver medal at the 2001 Americas Cup in Kingston, Jamaica, and played with the squad at the Korea Telecom Cup.

Kauffman was one of Maryland's most decorated players from 1992-1996. She earned All-America first-team honors twice (1994, 1996), All-ACC accolades three times (1993, 1994 and 1996) and was named to the ACC academic honor roll three times (1993, 1994 and 1996). The GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American helped lead Maryland to the 1993 NCAA Division I championship and the 1992 ACC tournament title.

Kauffman earned a bachelor's degree in marketing from Maryland in 1997.
