Terps Spend Sunday Giving Back

SAN FRANCISCO – The Maryland football team spent Sunday morning volunteering at St. Anthony's shelter in the Tenderloin district of the city. Led by head coach Randy Edsall, the Terps spent three hours at the shelter with the offense and defense splitting time.

“This is just a great opportunity for our young men to be able to help out people who are a little bit less fortunate and give back to the San Francisco community that has been so gracious to us in our stay here,” said Edsall. “Really, it's about getting our guys to understand football is just a game, this is life. Hopefully, to get them to understand they can make a difference in other people's lives who are little bit less fortunate.”

The student-athletes assisted the shelter in a variety of ways from severing and delivering meals, to preparing food for the next day, and busing tables.

The St. Anthony's Dining Room has served poor and homeless Tenderloin residents since 1950; through six decades of growing demand the shelter has never turned a guest away for lack of food. More than one-third of the guests rely on these meals as their only source of food each day.

Following its trip to St. Anthony's, Maryland will hold its final full practice of the season at Laney College in Oakland this afternoon. In the evening, the Terps will take in a cable car tour of downtown San Francisco.

Maryland and Stanford are set for a 10 p.m. ET kick off from Levi's Stadium on Tuesday, Dec. 30.
