CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – A day after throwers scored Maryland's first points at the conference meet, Josh Haghighi and Cici Onyekwere added to the Terrapins' totals in the shot put Friday at the Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Haghighi finished fifth in the men's shot put by going 19 inches past his ACC mark from a year ago, while Onyekwere became only the fourth Terp woman over 50 feet in the women's shot and finished sixth in a strong field.
Haghighi had his best mark in the sixth and final round, going 54-9.25. His previous best in the competition was 52-4 and he moved from ninth to fifth with that final toss. He placed seventh last year at 53-1.75.
Onyekwere moved into third place all-time at Maryland in the women's shot put with her mark of 50-10.25. She came into the ACC Outdoor just a quarter-inch short of the 50-foot mark, but had four attempts past that milestone in Friday's completion.
Fellow sophomore Sonya Napariu had a season-best and ECAC-qualifying mark of 44-8.25 to place 12th, a day after she scored in the women's hammer.
Points scored in the shot put Friday put the Terps in 10th place in the women's team standings with 11 points, while the men were 11th with six points.
On the track Friday, senior Avery Graham had the fifth-best time in the men's 100-meter dash prelims, going a season-best 10.65 to earn a spot in Saturday's final.
Freshman Micha Powell cut more than a second off her previous season-best in the women's 400 prelims, going 54.40 to finish ninth and miss a berth in the final by 0.09 seconds. Her time, though, ranked sixth all-time at Maryland.
Junior Myah Hicks also just missed a spot in Saturday finals in the women's 800, placing ninth at 2:08.09.
Freshman Chardé Barnes cut 18 seconds off her PR in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:23.93.
Five other Maryland women posted season-bests on Friday, including Shade Pratt (56.74, 400), Ashley Brannock (56.86, 400), Arielle Statham (57.55, 400), Julie Sinkovitz (2:09.44, 800), Alexa Squirini (2:16.49 at 800, 4:41.79 at 1,500).
Maryland men posting season-bests were Trey Sherman (11.10, 100m), Lionel Wilson (48.71, 400) and Dan Trettel (1:53.35, 800).
Florida State held the lead in the team standings for both men and women after the second of three days of competition.
The Seminoles had 67 points on the women's side to lead Virginia Tech (37), Duke (33) and North Carolina (33). FSU had 48 points in the men's standings to best Duke (46) and Syracuse (33) heading into Saturday's final day of competition.
