ROSEMONT, Ill. – Junior captain Sarah Sprink and freshman Moira Putsch of the second-ranked Maryland field hockey team earned the program's first Big Ten weekly honors Tuesday. Sprink was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week and Putsch was named Big Ten Rookie of the Week.
Sprink and Putsch each notched five points in the Terrapins' two wins over in the Terrapin Invitational this weekend.
Against Drexel, Putsch put the Terrapins on the board 13 minutes in when she deflected in a long pass for the score. Four minutes into the second half, Putsch knocked in a shot off a pass from Sprink on a penalty corner for a 2-0 lead. Sprink scored herself in the 57th minute off another penalty corner.
In Sunday's match against No. 16 Temple, Sprink scored Maryland's third and final goal off a corner in the 51st minute. Putsch inserted on the play to notch an assist.
Next, the Terrapins will play their first conference game as a member of the Big Ten at No. 15 Northwestern (4-3) on Saturday, Sept. 20 at noon ET.
