UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Senior Thea LaFond captured the triple jump and high jump events to lead the Maryland track and field team at the Penn State Relays Saturday.
LaFond combined with senior Amber Melville to take the top two spots in the high jump. Both jumped 5-11.25. LaFond nabbed the triple jump with a mark of 42-05.25.
Coming off a strong cross country season, senior Myah Hicks continued her solid run of form by winning the mile run. Hicks eased to the finish with a time of 5:00.17. Junior Emily VandeWater also recorded a solid performance, notching a time of 5:06.69 to finish fourth.
The Terps were strong in the shot put with junior Chioma Onyekwere winning the event with a mark of 47'8” and freshman Claudia Ababio grabbing second with a mark of 45'1”. The duo took third and sixth in the weight throw, respectively.
Freshman Kayla Richardson took second in the long jump, leaping 18'1.25. Three Terps made the 60m hurdles finals. Junior Noella Anyangwe (4th, 8.86), Sophomore Lisa Meneau (6th, 8.90) and Freshman Peyton Wade (7th, 9.27) all performed well in their first competition of the season.
On the men's side, senior Derek Holland jumped 48'6” to win the triple jump. Freshman Louis Corgliano recorded a nice start to his college career, finishing second in the 3000m (8:33.45). Senior Terrence Maliff ran 1:05.72 to finish fifth in the men's 500m.
The Terps return to competition on Jan. 17 for the Terrapin Invitational at the Prince George's County Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Md.
