COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Redshirt junior Lou Mascola picked up a technical fall victory, but the Maryland wrestling team fell, 24-11, to No. 22 Rutgers at the XFINITY Center Pavilion Sunday.
The Terps (5-10, 0-4 Big Ten) fell behind 14-0 early before winning at 157, 197 and 285 pounds. Senior Spencer Myers notched the win at heavyweight to move his record to 3-0 while senior Rob Fitgerald won at 197.
“It was a good match,” head coach Kerry McCoy said. “We knew it was going to be tough starting off. Great job by Fitz coming out and beating a really seasoned guy. Spencer's only been on the mat for two weeks and he beat a top guy. Lou Mascola continues to roll. Those were good wins."
The dual started at 125 pounds with junior Josh Polacek taking on Sean McCabe. Polacek had his opportunities throughout the match, but McCabe was able to notch the decisive takedown to win 3-1.
Maryland suffered a tough loss at 133 pounds when Scott DelVecchio upset No. 10 Geoffrey Alexander. No. 6 Anthony Ashnault upped the Rutgers lead to 9-0 with a 3-1 win over No. 17 Shyheim Brown.
After a Scarlet Knight tech fall at 149 pounds, Mascola put the Terps on the board with a 16-1 tech fall over Dylan Painton. Mascola was dominant on top en route to the victory.
Rutgers nabbed wins at 165, 174, and 184 pounds to extend the lead to 24-5. Junior Josh Snook was a split second away from a third period escape that would've forced a sudden victory period in his 174-pound bout.
At 197 pounds, Fitzgerald picked up his first career win over a ranked opponent with a 6-4 win against No. 18 Andrew Campolattano. The senior took down Campolattano in the waning moments of the match to seal the victory.
No. 11 Spencer Myers sent the Terps out on a high note with a 5-3 victory over No. 13 Billy Smith at heavyweight. Myers benefitted from two stall calls and was able to push the match into the second sudden victory period where he pounced on a double leg takedown and finished the match.
Maryland returns to action next Sunday against No. 4 Ohio State. Action is scheduled to begin at noon from the XFINITY Center.
