BALTIMORE, Md. -- A 27-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter by Christian Hackenberg lifted Penn State to a 31-30 victory over Maryland Saturday afternoon in front of 68,948 at M&T Bank Stadium.
Penn State improves to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten, while Maryland falls to 2-5 on the year and 0-3 in league play.
Maryland led in the fourth quarter after junior Perry Hills directed an 88-yard march that ended with a 10-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Lane, making it 27-24. The touchdown reception was the first in Lane's career.
Hills ran for 128 yards and completed 19 of 28 passes for 225 yards. He's the first Terp to run for 100 yards in consecutive games since C.J. Brown accomplished the feat in 2011.
Penn State regained the lead, 31-27, with 13:39 left when Hackenberg hit Geno Lewis.
Maryland cut the gap with a field goal to make it 31-30, but the Terps committed turnovers on three of their final four possessions to come up short.
Maryland returns to action next Saturday at No. 12/13 Iowa. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. and the game can be seen on ABC or ESPN2.
