COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland Track and Field team remained on a roll on home turf, hosting the Jim Kehoe Twilight Meet Friday evening on Senior Day.
The Terps competed against schools from across the Mid-Atlantic region, including Penn State, Georgetown and UDC, as well as unattached competitors. Maryland placed second to Penn State in the men's competition with 145 points and dominated the women's field with a tally of 247.5 points.
Jim Kehoe exceled as a middle-distance runner at Maryland, setting school records in the 2-mile run and 880-yard run. Mr. Kehoe returned to the University of Maryland and served as the Track and Field coach, beginning in 1946.
Mr. Kehoe then went on to become the University's athletic director in 1969 and served in the position for nine years until his resignation in 1978.
Highlights from the Maryland Squad included:
Maryland's women's team was spectacular Friday, racking up 247.5 points to pace the competition. Maryland's men's squad also placed well in the field with 145 points behind fellow Big Ten member, Penn State.
Senior Myah Hicks had her best race of the season in the 800m run. The senior placed second with a time of 2:07.26. This will set up Hicks well for post-season competition.
Jakub Zivec won the men's 1500m race with a new lifetime best mark of 3:44.33. Zivec closed at a quick pace over the last 200m to edge out Georgetown for the win. He is looking strong as he is now ranked 2nd in the Big Ten in this event.
Pat Cole continued to improve on his school record in the Hammer throw. The senior won this event with a mark of 199'10”, breaking the record for the 3rd time this season. Cole continued to bring great numbers to the team after setting a personal record at the Penn Relays last weekend.
Senior Amber Melville continued her remarkable season in the high jump, finishing with a mark of 5'10”. Senior Thea LaFond did not participate in the high jump.
Sophomore Micha Powell snagged second place in the women's 400m dash with a time of 54.50 seconds.
In the women's 400m hurdles, sophomores Lisa Meneau (59.17 seconds), Taylor Tucker (1:01.41) and Alexandra Cimino (1:01.52) took second, third and fourth places respectively. All three athletes improved on their season best heading into the championship portion of the season.
In the shot put competition, junior Chioma Onyekwere remained on a positive note and finished second behind Rachel Fatherly, of Penn State, with a throw of 49'2.50.”
Freshman Alexandra Lucki finished third in the 1500m run in a swarm of Georgetown runners with a time of 4:27.62 and a strong kick to the finish. Also notable in the 1500m run were sophomore Alexa Squirini (4:46.61) and junior Catherine Sheffo (4:47.87) who placed 12th and 13th respectively.
Senior Thea LaFond saw action, taking second place in the long jump with a tally of 5.64m, followed by freshmen Kayla Richardson and Peyton Wade. Richardson and Wade jumped 5.37m and 5.32m respectively.
Freshman Breanna Coleman took home first place in the women's triple jump with a mark of 11.32m.
Freshman Claudia Ababio also continued her impressive year after placing second in women's hammer throw with a toss of 51.84m.
Sophomore Charde' Barnes and junior Katie Nappi were the two lone runners in the 3000m steeplechase with Nappi taking first place, posting a time of 11:11.18. Barnes finished right behind with a time of 11:29.29.
In the men's 110m hurdles, freshman Diego Lyon took third place with a time of 15.03 seconds with sophomore Clyde Gross nearby in fourth place with a time of 15.09 seconds.
Senior Lionel Wilson finished second in the men's 400m dash with a time of 48.90 seconds. Freshman Alex Leto took third place with a time of 49.05.
Senior Terrence Maliff grabbed first place in the men's 400m hurdles with a time of 53.53 seconds, followed by sophomore Paul Joseph, who took second place with a run of 55.12 seconds.
The women's 4x400m relay squad of Meneau, Pratt, Tucker and Powell saw success after finishing in first place with a time of 3:47.90.
Sophomore Sydney Almeida closed the night out in style for the women with a second place finish in the 5000m run with a time of 17:27.98.
The Terps will travel to East Lansing, Mich. to participate in the Big Ten Championships on May 15.
