LANCASTER, Pa. - Seven Maryland field hockey players wrapped up competition at USA Field Hockey's Young Women's National Championship at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Lancaster, Pa. Friday.
Senior Alyssa Parker and Team Patriots won the event, going 2-0-2 in their four games.
"Tournaments like this one are always so fun because you experience new things," Parker said. "You get to play with girls from different schools and you get to be coached by new coaches, so you're constantly learning and growing to help you and your team get better."
Sophomore Carrie Hanks competed on Team Red and senior Anna Dessoye, redshirt junior Emma Rissinger and redshirt sophomore Brooke Adler were on Team Blue. Redshirt sophomore Marissa Cutry and freshman Linnea Gonzales are on Team Freedom.
"It's a great experience learning to play with girls from other universities with different styles of hockey, which makes it a fun competitive environment," Rissinger said. "We love taking new things back to College Park."
This year's tournament serves as the selection event for the junior national team camp July 5-8, where the new Under-17, Under-19, and Under-21 squads are selected.
For those that are not age eligible for the Junior World Cup in 2016, it is an opportunity to be evaluated and considered for as a transitional national team member until they can join in residential training in Lancaster full time.
Dessoye, Parker and Gonzales are currently on the Under-21 Team. Hanks is on the Under-19 Team.
