Box Score COLLEGE PARK, Md.- An eleven hit outburst, including at least one hit by eight out of the nine Terrapin batters, pushed Maryland to a 7-4 win over Nebraska on Friday night.
Sarah Calta continued her midseason sprint, going 3-4 with two runs and one RBI. Skylynne Ellazar provided the timely hits; going 2-4 with two RBI knocks.
Madison Martin earned the win in the circle, her second of the season, by going five innings while allowing three runs and striking out four.
"We played a complete game, the style of softball we've been talking about playing," said head coach Julie Wright. "The energy was great, Madison gave us a tremendous start, and we hit the ball."
Nebraska took a 1-0 lead in the second inning off an Alyvia Simmons long ball. Simmons' homer was one of only two hits Martin would allow through four innings.
The Terrapins then put forth their best response of the season, scoring a combined seven runs in the third and fourth innings.
Destiney Henderson started the hit parade with a double that beat the shallow Husker outfielders. Promptly, Kylie Datil found a hole for a bunt single to give the Terrapins a first and third situation. Aggressive base running on a Sarah Calta fielder's choice tied the game for Maryland. On the next swing, Skylynne Ellazar slammed a double to the left field fence to put the Terps on top 2-1.
After Kristina Dillard led the fourth inning off with a single up the middle, the next two were retired to give Maryland a runner on first with two outs. What followed was seven straight base runners, six hits, and five runs. Calta and Ellazar singled, Hannah Dewey cracked a two RBI double, and after a Lindsey Schmeiser walk, Sarah Lang capped it off with a RBI single to right. After four innings, it was 7-1 Maryland.
The Huskers would respond with two runs off Martin in the fifth. Brenna Nation entered the game in the sixth and closed it out to preserve the Terrapins first Big Ten win of 2016.
Maryland will look to take the series against Nebraska tomorrow at the Maryland Softball Stadium. First pitch will be at 2:00 p.m.
