Terps Tangle With #2 Michigan This Weekend

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The Maryland softball team will travel to Ann Arbor, for a weekend set against one of the nation's best teams, No. 2 Michigan.

The Terps will play their third consecutive game on national television this Friday night, as the series opener against the Wolverines will be aired live on the Big Ten Network. 

This weekend on the diamond

Maryland will make its first ever trip to Ann Arbor this weekend for a three-game clash against No. 2 Michigan. 

Friday's bout will air live on BTN, with Lisa Byington and Carol Bruggerman on the call. You can watch the Terps at 6:00 p.m. 

All of this weekends games will take place at the Wilpon Softball Compex, on the campus of the University of Michigan, which is located at 1202 S. State St. Ann Arbor, MI 48104.

Last time out

  • Maryland is coming off an 0-5 week against Penn State and Rutgers. The dropped fought in all three games against Penn State and then had the bats go silent on Wednesday against the Scarlet Knights.
  • Kristina Dillard had the best individual weekend of any Terp this season up at Penn State, batting .800 at the plate. The junior captain was 8-10 with four RBIs and two doubles. Dillard reached base nine times in eleven at bats. Dillard added another RBI on Wednesday against Rutgers.
  • Brenna Nation has had a strong week, notching the start in three games and pitching to a 3.13 ERA in 15.2 innings pitched.
  • Before this past week, the Terrapins had their best week of the year, going 3-2 with a series win against Michigan State and a doubleheader split with St. Francis.

quick hits

  • On the season, the Terps are hitting .288 with a .364 on base percentage and a .396 slugging percentage. Maryland has cracked 322 hits, scored 165 runs, knocked 52 doubles, and totaled 443 bases.
  • Skylynne Ellazar has been a force from the plate all season. Through 41 games, the Hawaii native is batting a team leading .405 by way of 53 hits and 28 runs. Ellazar ranks fourth in the Big Ten in hits , sixth in batting average, eighth in doubles, and twelveth in on base percentage.
  • Kristina Dillard and Sarah Calta have also produced in the lineup. The captain duo rank second and third on the team in batting average and hits. Dillard shares the doubles lead (9) with Ellazar, while Calta leads the team and ranks third in the Big ten in triples (4).

ScOUTING Michigan

  • Michigan enters this weekends series ranked number two in the country and first in the Big Ten. The Wolverines stand at 34-4 overall and 12-2 in the Big Ten.
  • The Wolverines flash a potent offense; leading the Big Ten in batting average (.339), slugging percentage (.590), on base percentage (.460), runs scored (315), home runs (59), and walks (184).
  • Sierra Romero, one of the nations best players, leads the Wolverines offensively with a .486 batting average. Romero has 51 hits, twelve dingers, and 33 walks.
  • The pitching staff is also top in the Big Ten in ERA and opposing batting average. Megan Betsa and Sara Driesenga share the load in the circle. Betsa has a 2.28 ERA, Driesenga has a 2.59 ERA.
  • Carol Hutchins is in her 32nd season at the helm of the Michigan softball program. The nation's all-time winingest coach, Hutchins has 1,466 career victories and has led the Wolverines to the Womens College World Series in 11 last 21 seasons. She led Michigan to the 2005 National Championship.

Terp NATION

  • Redshirt Junior Brenna Nation has been steady in the circle over the last ten games, posting a 3.32 ERA.
  • The Chickamauga, Ga. native has earned all three of the Terrapins wins over that time period. Nation has started half of the games, and has thrown two complete games.
  • On Wednesday, Nation had one of her best outings of the year against Rutgers, pitching a complete game, and only allowing one earned run.

Sky's the Limit

  • Skylynne Ellazar has been nothing short of sensational from the plate this season.
  • The Hawaii native leads the Terps in batting average, hits, runs, and doubles, slugging percentage, and on base percentage. Ellazar ranks top fifteen in the Big Ten in five categories.
  • Right now, Ellazar also holds the best career batting average in Maryland softball history at .385.
  • Over the past 28 games, Ellazar leads the team with a .423 batting average.

Legendary Lindsey

  • In her senior season, Lindsey Schmeiser has put together quite the Terrapin career.
  • Schmeiser has earned numerous accolades during her Terrapin career, including 2013 ACC Freshman of the Year, First-Team All ACC, First-Team Big Ten, and Big Ten Player of the Week (3/16/15).
  • The week of February 20th might've been Schmeiser's most successful yet. On Sunday Feb 21, Lindsey broke the school home run record. On Monday Feb 22 she was named a 2016 Senior CLASS Award candidate. To cap it off, on Tuesday Feb 23 she was named the Solomon Eye Terp of the Week.
  • The Dunkirk, Md. native is climbing atop the all-time ranks in numerous categories. Schmeiser is fourth in Maryland softball batting average ranks (.333), has the most home runs (31), and runs (134) in Maryland softball history and is eight doubles (38) away from breaking the school doubles record, held by Lindsey Klein and Shannon Bustillos.
  • Last season, Schmeiser broke the single-season double record (21) and had a 23 game hitting streak. In her freshman year, Schmeiser had the most RBIs (59) in a single season ever.

Dillard Dagger

  • Junior Captain, Kristina Dillard has made quite an impact in her first season wearing Maryland colors.
  • A transfer from the University of Louisville, the Hanover, Md. native returned home and instantly made her presence known, as she was voted as a team captain.
  • Dillard has done damage on the field, the junior ranks second on the team with a .338 batting average. She also ranks second in RBI's (27) and total bases (61). The transfer shares the doubles lead (9) with Ellazar after smashing two this previous weekend.
  • Behind the dish, the vocal leader has thirteen “Dillard Darts” this season (runners caught stealing), which leads the Big Ten.

looking ahead

  • Maryland will face its second straight ranked opponent on the road next weekend, as the Terps travel to Minnesota for a weekend series against the Gophers.
