COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's golf team hosted their first-ever B1G Break Challenge Fundraiser and Clinic Saturday, April 30 at the University of Maryland Golf Course.
“We wanted to have a unique event where golfers from all levels could come to our Holman Short Game Facility and spend quality time with our student-athletes while also have fun competing in games,” head coach Diana Cantu said. “We decided to take the iconic Golf Channel's Big Break TV show idea and turn it into our own version of it.”
The day's activities included a 40-minute clinic ran by the coaching staff and our student-athletes. Participants went through putting, chipping, pitching, flop shots, and punch shots, all of which were shots that would be needed in the challenges throughout the afternoon. Everyone was then divided into smaller groups in order to go through competition stations, consisting of:
The Flop Wall
- Players attempted to hit a flop shot over a wall while trying to make the ball stop as close to the pin as possible
The Pitching Target
- Players attempted to hit each wooden target
The Chipping Bullseye
- Players attempted to hit it into the smallest circle on a chip shot
Testudo Putting Obstacle Course
- Players went through nine holes attempting to have the fewest putts possible
B1G Ten Glass Break Challenge
- Players attempted to break each B1G School logo with a punch shot.
“This was a great opportunity for us to reach out to our community and spend time with our supporters,” Cantu said. “Our student-athletes enjoyed the chance to share some of their knowledge and experiences with the attendees. We are already looking forward to next year's event!”
