Meharg to Be Inducted into DC Sports Hall of Fame

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland field hockey head coach Missy Meharg will be inducted into the D.C. Sports Hall of Fame Sunday prior to the Washington Nationals' game at Nationals Park.

The nine-time National Coach of the Year is the third Terrapin head coach to be inducted, following former basketball coaches Gary Williams and Chris Weller in recent years.

The other inductees include former Washington Post writer and USA Today columnist Christine Brennan, Georgetown star Patrick Ewing, voice of the Redskins Frank Herzog, NBA player Earl Lloyd, Redskins player Dexter Manley, longtime high school football Coach Bob Milloy, prep sports stars Hymie and Phil Perlo, and tennis star Harold Solomon. The inductees are chosen by a 10-person panel including Nationals principal owner Mark Lerner, former Washington Post sports editor George Solomon, ESPN 980 host Doc Walker, longtime broadcaster Phil Wood and other longtime local sports figures.

Meharg is headed into her 29th year at the helm of the Maryland field hockey program. She has helped the Terps to eight NCAA titles, including seven as head coach. She's also led the Terrapins to 22 conference titles. Last year, she became the fourth head coach to reach the 500-career win mark. Her career record is 509-123-1 (.801).

In her tenure as head coach, she's led Maryland to 16 Final Fours and has been named NFHCA National Coach of the Year an unprecedented nine times. Five of her players have earned seven Honda Sports Awards for the top player in the country. She has coached 46 All-Americans and her players have earned over 120 All-Conference selections.

Seven of head coach Meharg's players have gone on to make Olympic rosters – Kate Kauffman Beach, Lauren Powley, Dina Rizzo, Sarah Silvetti, Keli Smith Puzo, Katie (O'Donnell) Bam and Jill Witmer. Meharg was an assistant with the U.S. national team at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and served as NBC's color analyst for field hockey during the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
