For Openers: Maryland won its seventh straight season-opener and 13th straight season-opener at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium. Maryland moved to 78-44-2 all-time in openers. It was also Maryland's third consecutive opener scoring at least 50 points.
Elite Company: Maryland's 52 points were the most in a Maryland head coaching debut since Paul “Bear” Bryant's Terps scored 60 points in 1945.
Start Fast: Maryland put up 35 points in the first half, its most points in a half since the first half against FIU (40) in 2013.
Yard Marker: The Maryland offense accumulated 519 total yards against Howard – the program reached that mark just one time in its previous 35 games dating back to Sept. 21, 2013.
Two-Ways: Senior William Likely III started on both offense and defense for the second time in his career (Wisconsin, 11/7/15). He was the only player in FBS to start on both sides in 2015.
Block Party: Sophomore Ty Johnson blocked a punt and senior Trey Edmunds returned for a touchdown for Maryland's third score of the first quarter. It is the first blocked punt returned for touchdown since Avery Thompson at USF on Sept. 6, 2014.
Spread the Wealth: Maryland had six different players score a rushing touchdown for the first time since four players since at least 1980 (need to do further research – possible record).
Making an Impression: In his Maryland debut after transferring from Virginia Tech, Trey Edmunds scored on a rushing play and blocked punt TD. It is his first two touchdown game since he scored four touchdowns at Miami on Nov. 9, 2013. Edmunds also surpassed 1,000 rushing yards for his career. His father, Ferrell, was an all-American tight end at Maryland and also today's honorary captain.
Dual Star: Senior Trey Edmunds scored on a 3-yard rush in the first quarter, before returning a blocked punt back 13 yards for a TD in the first. It's the first time a player had an offensive and special teams touchdown since Torrey Smith (rushing, kick return) against James Madison on Sept. 12, 2009.
Feed the Big Man: Senior Kenneth Goins scored his second career rushing touchdown on the first series. It was also the second straight game in which he has scored a rushing touchdown (Rutgers, 11/28/15). He also took a carry 36 yards in the third quarter, the longest rush of his career.
DMV Made: Former local prep standouts Lorenzo Harrison and Jake Funk scored their first career rushing touchdowns today in their collegiate debuts.
So Fresh, So Clean: A total of 14 true freshmen made their Maryland debuts today - Max Bortenschlager, Antoine Brooks, Elijah Daniels, Terrance Davis, Tino Ellis, Jake Funk, Lorenzo Harrison, Qwuantrezz Knight, Wade Lees, Adam McLean, Tyrrell Pigrome, Antwaine Richardson, Brett Shepherd and D.J. Turner
For Starters: Ty Johnson and Brendan Moore both made their first career starts on offense, while Shane Cockerille, Denzel Conyers, RaVon Davis, Kingsely Opara, and Cavon Walker made their first career starts on the defensive end.
