COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore defensive back Antoine Brooks, Jr., senior linebacker Jermaine Carter, Jr., junior defensive back JC Jackson and junior defensive back Darnell Savage, Jr. were named Honorable Mention All-Big Ten, the league announced on Tuesday.
Jackson and Savage earned recognition from both the media voters and the Big Ten's 14 head coaches that also vote, while Carter and Brooks received the nod from the media members that cover the conference.
Brooks, who played in all 12 games with 11 starts, ranked second on the team with 77 tackles. One of the top playmakers on the defense, Brooks paced the team with 9.5 tackles for loss and was third on the squad with two interceptions. The sophomore made one of the most memorable plays of the 2017 season when he scooped a blocked field and ran it back for a 71-yard touchdown in Maryland's win at Texas.
Carter, who has been named Honorable Mention All-Big Ten for the third straight year, ranked tied for fourth in the country with four forced fumbles in 2017. The senior also led the Terps and ranked ninth in the Big Ten with 90 tackles. Carter is just the fifth player since 1969 to lead the Terps in tackles three straight seasons, joining Alex Wujciak (2008-10), D'Qwell Jackson(2003-05), E.J. Henderson (2000-02) and Ratcliff Thomas (1993-95).
Jackson, regarded as Maryland's top cover corner, tied for the team lead and ranked tied for seventh in the Big Ten with three interceptions in 2017. He also ranked second on the team and Top 20 in the league with 10 passes defended, including seven pass breakups.
Savage ended the year tied with Jackson for the team lead in interceptions (3), which ranked tied for seventh in the Big Ten. The junior paced the Terps with eight pass breakups and ranked tied for 12th in the league with 11 passes defended. Savage also blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown in Maryland's win over Indiana and ran back an interceptions for a 75-yard touchdown in the Terps win over Towson.
The league also announced Chandler Burkett as Maryland's sportsmanship award honoree on Tuesday.
The Big Ten will announce the offensive teams on Wednesday and the major individual award winners on Thursday.
