SAN JUAN, P.R. - Panitta Yusabai tied for first place to lead the Maryland women's golf team at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic Tuesday.
Yusabai shot a one-under to capture the tournament title along with Naomi Ko (NC State), Haylee Harford (Furman), and Maria Vesga and Amy Lee (Baylor). Yusabai posted a team-best 70 in the final round after registering a 72 on Sunday and a 73 on Monday.
Ludovica Scandroglio tied for 51st (83-75-72) and Kavita Sehmi tied for 69th (81-80-75).
Ludovica Farina (79-76-84) and Xiaolin Tian (84-77-78) tied for 73rd.
Maryland – which struggled in the first round – improved each day, culminating with its best score of 295 in Tuesday's third round action. The Terps finished 14th in the competitive field.
“I am so proud of Panitta,” head coach Diana Cantu said. “Tying for first place is a huge accomplishment, especially with such a strong field with so many great players. Her mental game was the best it's been since I've coached her at Maryland.
“As a team, our first round really set us back but I'm proud we improved every day. Sometimes it can be difficult to perform in the first event coming off the winter. We have a lot to work on and a very short turnaround for Central District.”
The Terps travel to Port St. Lucie, Fla., for the Central District Invitational Feb. 20-21.
