Head Coach Brenda Frese
Opening statement:
"Obviously I'm really extremely proud of this team to be able to send our seniors out in just an incredible day. Then when you talk about the consistency factor of back-to-back-to-back regular season titles. These guys work so hard but they make it look so easy. It's not easy. When you talk about that consistency level, playing at that level over the course of the season. To be that dominant over the course of 16 games.
"I thought the game today was one of our best defensive games. Probably not offensively when you talk about turnovers, but we settled in in the second half. Defensively we were dominant. We really made Carlie Wagner have to work. We shared the basketball great and our seniors were just sensational during our senior day."
On the scoring today:
"It came by committee. When you talk about the starting five and even the other three wanting to play well for Shatori and Bri. It was a dominant first quarter. You could tell when Shatori and Bri made their first shot they were going to settle in. That had a big impact on the game."
On the leadership of Walker-Kimbrough and Jones:
"They live that every single day. They give the example, when you walk into the gym the ball is bouncing and it's these two who are there early and stay late. They've left their mark every single day through their consistency, their work ethic, their leadership. That's when you pass the baton down to your younger classes in terms of what it takes to be a successful."
On how the team could improve for the postseason:
"One of the things I really challenged our team on was our defense, I feel like we have really taken off in terms of what we're doing. Our bench has to continue to give us great depth. Especially in the Big Ten Tournament, three games in three days. We have to continue to utilize our depth and be consistent in that area."
On how the team is preparing for postseason play:
“I think it is important that the three of us are leaders. They layer it behind the scenes, in the locker room, in the hotel room, and on the floor and they have done that all season. They have played in a lot of great big time moments. All these guys have came to Maryland and had a lot of experience, but the seniors are going to set the tone. They will do it behind the scenes and they will do it from the tip. Our team will feel that it is do or die time and we want to continue on.”
On effort against Carlie Wagner:
“The assignment started with Shatori. Shatori has been challenged in the last half of the conference race defensively. She has taken this to heart and has been our lockdown defender on the best player. It starts with her energy and her tone, then collectively as a team we cover each other up. She is a phenomenal player. I don't know if she's only scored five points on anyone all season long. That is how much our defense has grown as a team and the trust system that is there.”
“She always bring a lot of energy whatever we are doing. When we are off the court she is great to have around. I think going into the tournament its about using all the energy and putting it into the game, which she does on a regular basis. I think to just keep what she's doing because she's playing great for a Freshman.”
On the emotions during the post-game festivities:
“I think excitement and I couldn't believe, after everything I've put in during my four years, seeing it before me. It was great. Playing in front of the fans that we have and just getting to share that with them made it even better.”
“Yeah I mean the kid is great. She doesn't shy away from the moment. At the end of the half, the stop and pop transition three, that was cold. There wasn't a doubt in my mind that she was going to make it. I have the utmost confidence in her. She is running our team. We look to her for our tempo and she really sets the tone offensively especially when she is aggressive. Like I said I have the utmost confidence in her going into March.
Minnesota Head Coach Marlene Stollings
On playing Maryland coming off a loss:
“With them coming off a loss and it being Senior Day — their seniors have had incredible careers here — and a great crowd, we knew we were coming into a hostile environment. Maryland's very good. When they're on, they're on. I thought they gave us opportunities that we didn't capitalize on. I'm pleased with us forcing 21 turnovers. Nonetheless, they're a high octane offensive team and we hope they do great things in the NCAA Tournament.”
On Maryland's shooting in the first quarter:
“We had a shot there in those other three quarters. But in that first quarter we dug quite a hole. We don't want them having 26-point quarters, but they're capable of that. Again, I go to us offensively and how we weren't able to score. I thought we got the types of looks that we were looking for, but we didn't necessarily finish well at the basket.”
“They're really special. What
Brionna Jones has done from her time as a freshman until now is pretty remarkable. I remember what she looked like when she came out of high school and her athleticism and things like that. What she developed into is a great credit to her work ethic. With
Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, I've heard Coach [Frese] say a lot that she's a self-made player. You see how many hours she's spent in the gym on her shooting. She shoots incredible percentages away from the basket and she's so smooth. We're certainly glad we won't be facing those two outside of the Big Ten Tournament. We wish them well and they're going to have great professional careers. They're great kids, too.”
