COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Rising junior women's golfer Ludovica Farina will compete for Italy at the World University Games in Taiwan, Taipei.
Farina – who hails from Siracusa, Italy – was one of three players selected from the country to compete in the games. She will be in Taiwan from Aug. 19-30, with 72-hole stroke play tournament action set for Aug. 24-27.
“It is obviously a great opportunity which fills my heart with pride,” Farina said. “I have been part of the national team since 2009 and I've had the fortune of traveling the world having some of the best experiences I could image and creating lifetime friendships. I love my country and I just can't wait to get into this new adventure with my teammates and play as best as I can for my nation.”
Selection for the Italian team is based on the World Amateur Golf Ranking system as well as results from the Italian Stroke Play Championship which wrapped up earlier this summer. The top three ranked/best players in the country were selected. Farina will join Bianca Fabrizio (Texas A&M) and Carlotta Ricolfi (Florida) on the Italian team.
“I can't wait to compete with the best players in the world having my best friends by my side,” Farina said. “I am lucky to have the chance to be part of such an amazing event and I want to enjoy it as much as I can.”
Farina has been terrific for the Terps the past two seasons, helping elevate the program to new levels and will look to take her collegiate experiences to Taiwan for golf on the global stage.
“Competing at high levels in some of the best tournaments in the NCAA collegiate circuit is helping me get better every day and pushes me to keep up with the best players in the country,” Farina said. “Maryland Women's Golf is improving every day. I can't thank Coach Cantu and Coach Simpson enough for always motivating me to set the bar higher and helping me believe in myself and what I am capable of.”
Farina won't be the only Terrapin in Taiwan. The Maryland women's basketball team will represent the United States at the games. Farina is hoping to check out that Maryland Pride in person should time permit.
“I am not sure what our schedule will be quite yet and how much free time we will have but I definitively want to watch Maryland basketball players and maybe hang out with them.”
