BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Junior Paul Bin scored in the 57th minute to level the match, but the Maryland men's soccer team fell to No. 4 Indiana, 2-1, after a last minute goal at Bill Armstrong Stadium Friday night.
The Terrapins (4-5-3, 2-3-1 Big Ten) played an inspired second half before Indiana's Andrew Gutman scored his second goal of the game with 18 second left to win the match for the home side. Gutman's first goal of the match in the 32nd minute gave the Hoosiers the lead.
"This game was there for the taking," coach Sasho Cirovski said. "We played well enough to win this game or to get a result. Indiana is a terrific team, but we came here and for 70 of the 90 minutes, we were the better team. To not end up with a result is bitterly disappointing."
Maryland was the better of the two sides in the first 10 minutes and had a good chance in the 12th minute. After a tackle from Brett St. Martin put the ball into the path of Bin, the junior sprinted down the right flank and put the ball into the box. The pass came into the path of Amar Sejdic, whose shot was tipped away by Trey Muse.
Just a minute later, junior Eli Crognale kept Indiana off the board with a fantastic block on close range Griffin Dorsey effort. Indiana would take control for the final 25 minutes of the half and scored on a Gutman header off a corner in the 32nd minute.
Bin leveled the score with his second goal of the season early in the second half. Crognale sent in a free kick into the box from 35 yards out that was cleared to Bin at the top of the box. The junior smashed the ball on the half volley past Muse and into the Indiana net.
From there, the Terps had more of the chances to find the winner. Senior Sebastian Elney forced a save from Muse with a shot at the top of the box in the 61st minute. In the 75th minute, Sejdic fired wide on the half volley from 20 yards out.
A minute later, Matt and Ben Di Rosa combined on a play that saw the former shoot wide. In the final few minutes, Indiana got back on the front foot and were rewarded with Gutman's goal with 18 seconds remaining.
Maryland center backs Donovan Pines and Johannes Bergmann were solid throughout the match. Left back Chase Gasper returned after missing the last seven matches duo to injury and played all 90 minutes.
Maryland returns to action Tuesday night against Denver. Kickoff from Ludwig Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
