B1G Champs! #2 Terps Win on Senior Day

COLLEGE PARK, Md.  –  The second-ranked Maryland field hockey team gritted out a tough win and held off No. 17 Northwestern to win, 2-1, and clinch at least a share of the Big Ten regular season championship Friday afternoon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.

The teams were tied at one with under three minutes remaining in regulation. With 2:26 to play, sophomore Bibi Donraadt scored her second goal of the day for the win. With the victory, the Terrapins (16-1, 7-1 B1G) have won four Big Ten regular season titles in their five years in the league.

"I'm ecstatic for the team," head coach Missy Meharg said. "We've been working very hard. Coming off of last weekend's trip to Indiana and Iowa, I applaud them and with midterms going on. Northwestern is a phenomenal team and we have been looking at all of their statistics and it was an evenly matched game. For us to find a way with two minutes left, was fantastic. I really applaud our corner defense team down the stretch. They're champions and they are warriors back there."

Northwestern (8-9, 3-5) jumped out to the early lead when Lakin Barry tipped in a shot by Maren Seidel just 93 seconds into the match.

Maryland tied it up in the 19th minute when Donraadt finished off a shot by senior Linnea Gonzales from the far post. The teams stayed tied through halftime and most of the second half before Donraadt's second score.

In the 68th minute, junior tri-captain Kelee Lepage tipped a loose ball to Donraadt for the winning score.

The Wildcats got a penalty corner with under 2:00 to play and the shot went wide left of the goal. Northwestern got another penalty corner with no time on the clock. Holliday made another save, then the Terrapins blocked the last two shots.

The Terrapins took 12 shots to Northwestern's 15 and had three corners to the Wildcats' six. Senior Sarah Holliday made nine saves, six in the first half, to preserve the Terrapins' 11th win over a ranked team.

Prior to Friday's game, the Terps will honor seniors Julie Duncan, Linnea Gonzales, Sarah Holliday, Olivia Reiter, Sabrina Rhodes and Melissa Wilken before Friday's game. This year's senior class has earned a record of 69-17, won four Big Ten titles, earned an NCAA Tournament berth every season and advanced to the NCAA title game last year.

Gonzales is leading Maryland with 12 goals this season and she is currently at 96 career points. Maryland has 10 scorers with multiple goals and 13 total Terps have found the goal line.

Holliday was named to the Victory Sports Tours/NFHCA Division I Senior Game this week. Selected seniors are given the opportunity to represent their institution while competing against their peers in the Division I Senior Game, which will take place in conjunction with the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship in Louisville, Ky.  The Senior Game is currently set for 6:00 p.m. on Friday, November 16, 2018 following the conclusion of the NCAA semifinal games at the University of Louisville's Trager Stadium.
