ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Despite a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown from senior
Ty Johnson, Maryland (3-2, 1-1 B1G) fell, 42-21, against No. 15 Michigan (5-1, 3-0 B1G) at Michigan Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
After a lightning delay forced the start of the game back just over an hour, Michigan got on the board with a field goal late in the first quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff, Johnson gave the Terps a 7-3 lead with his second career kickoff return for touchdown. Johnson had a 100-yard kickoff return TD at Ohio State in 2017.
Johnson is quickly nearing 4,000 career all-purpose yards. After today, he sits at 3,935 career all-purpose yards. He'd become just the fourth Terp to ever accomplish that feat, joining Torrey Smith (5,264), LaMont Jordan (4,960) and Stefon Diggs (4,106).
Michigan, which won its fifth straight game, scored twice each in the second and third quarters to take a 27-7 lead.
The Terps used a 15-play, 75-yard drive that was capped by a
Javon Leake touchdown run to pull to within 27-14, but Maryland would get no closer.
Tyrrell Pigrome capped the Maryland scoring with a five-yard touchdown run late in the game.
Pigrome and
Tayon Fleet-Davis each rushed for 63 yards as the Terps totaled 147 yards on the ground against the nation's No. 1 defense.
Tre Watson paced the Terps with 10 tackles, while senior
Darnell Savage, Jr. grabbed his second interception of the year to pace the Maryland defense.
The Terps return home next Saturday for a Homecoming contest against Rutgers. The game is set to kickoff at noon.
