Terps Drop Heartbreaker to Hoosiers, 34-32

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. –Redshirt freshman running back Anthony McFarland rushed for a Maryland freshman record 210 yards on 29 carries, but the Maryland football team fell, 34-32, at Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon.

After going up 6-0 in the first quarter, the Terrapins (5-5, 3-4 Big Ten) were outscored 31-9 and at one point trailed 31-15 in the third quarter. After 17 unanswered Maryland points gave the Terps the lead late in the fourth quarter, Indiana hit a field goal that turned out to be the game winner with 2:32 to go in the game.

McFarland's 210 yards was a career high and the most for a Maryland player since senior Ty Johnson ran for 204 yards against Purdue in 2016. The Hyattsville, Md., native also broke LaMont Jordan's single season freshman rushing record and now has 724 yards for the season.

Sophomore Tyrell Pirgrome threw for 146 yards on 10-for-13 passing with a touchdown in relief of Kasim Hill, who sustained an injury in the third quarter. Freshman Jeshaun Jones caught six balls, a career high, for 67 yards and a score while Dontay Demus notched a career high with 98 receiving yards.

Senior Tre Watson led the defense with seven total tackles and notched his fifth interception of season, which is tied for the most by a linebacker in Maryland history. The Terps now have 17 picks on the year after leading the country in that category entering the weekend.

Maryland returns to action next Saturday on Senior Day at Maryland Stadium against Ohio State. Time and television coverage are TBD.
