EAST LANSING, Mich. – Sophomore Eric Matzelevich scored in the first overtime period to lift the fifth-seeded Maryland men's soccer team past fourth-seeded Michigan State in the Big Ten Quarterfinals at DeMartin Soccer Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Terrapins (8-6-3, 4-4-0 Big Ten) and Spartans played an up-and-down affair that saw both teams have chances to find breakthrough over the regulation 90 minutes. After the Terps thwarted a few good Michigan State chances early in overtime, Matzelevich tapped in a rebound from close range in the 98th minute to end it.
"I'm ecstatic with our overall team performance today," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "We challenged our guys to come out here and compete and our guys came through with flying colors. It was a complete team performance and the best overall performance of the season."
Both sides had solid opportunities in the opening 45 minutes. In the 21st minute, junior Eli Crognale hit a 25-yard volley that was saved. A few minutes later, a good passage of play opened up a show at the top of the box for senior Amar Sejdic, whose shot was tipped away by Jimmy Hague.
In the second half, redshirt junior keeper Dayne St. Clair saved the day for the Terps twice. The Canadian flew to the upper left corner of the goal to deny Farai Mutati. St. Clair then made his best save of the season, stretching out to his right to stave off a Michael Miller effort with his right hand.
Freshman Vinicius Lansade almost gave the Terps the lead in the 75th minute. After Sejdic drove into the box, his deflected shot fell to Lansade who fired a right-footed shot that was tipped over by Hague.
Freshman Justin Gielen came even close with under seven minutes left. Sophomore Matt Di Rosa crossed a ball to the back post that Gielen connected with, but his floating header bounced off the crossbar.
After St. Clair made two strong saves in the first couple minutes of overtime, junior Paul Bin almost won it in the 97th minute, but Hague denied his effort from 10 yards. In the 98th minute, Matzelevich ended the match. Lansade fired a low dipping effort from 30 yards that Hague parried into the path of the Washington D.C. native. Matzelevich finished into the open net for his second goal of the season.
With the win, Maryland moved to 8-1-2 all-time in Big Ten Tournament play. The Terps back-four of Donovan Pines, Johannes Bergmann, Matt Di Rosa and Ben Di Rosa were solid throughout.
The Terps will face top-seeded Indiana in the Big Ten Semifinals next Friday at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., and the match will be shown live on BTN.
