SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Junior
Donovan Pines and sophomore
Matt Di Rosa each scored a goal as the Maryland men's soccer team (12-6-4) topped second-seeded Indiana (20-3-1), 2-0, at Harder Stadium to advance to the NCAA College Cup Final on Sunday.
Di Rosa opened the scoring in the first half, and Pines sealed the deal in the 79th minute to propel the Terps into a showdown with Akron in the championship match. The Terps back line was sensational throughout the match and has not given up a goal in the last 410 minutes of play,
"We are absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to play on Sunday," head coach
Sasho Cirovski said. "I was really impressed with the performance of our team today. To beat a great program like Indiana on this stage -- it was going to take a Herculean effort on both sides of the ball. This was our most complete performance of the year. We knew we would have to take balls off the line and block shots to try and contain their terrific players. We put together a game plan to do that and our players executed perfectly. I have massive respect for Indiana and it stinks that one of us couldn't advance tonight. But I'm really proud of our team. I'm happy for our fans and I'm really excited to have another opportunity to play in the final."
Neither side gained much traction on the offensive front in the first 20 minutes. Maryland's
Paul Bin was able to put a shot on frame in the seventh minute, but Indiana's Trey Muse handled it cleanly.
The Terrapins then broke the deadlock in the 37th minute when Di Rosa slipped a shot through traffic to beat Muse to give Maryland the advantage. It was the first goal of the sophomore's career. Junior
Eli Crognale served in the corner that deflected off
Chase Gasper and into the path of Di Rosa.
A quiet few minutes took place following the goal, and Maryland took a one goal lead into the dressing room.
The Hoosiers came out on the front foot to begin the second interval, consistently challenging the Maryland back line in the opening 15 minutes. Indiana nearly found the equalizer, but Maryland's
Ben Di Rosa emerged from the swarm in front of the net to clear the ball off Maryland's line.
15 minutes later, Maryland gave itself a two-goal cushion as Pines snuck a ball into the Hoosier net for his second tally of the season. Crognale was against provided the service on a 40-yard free kick, which popped off an Indiana defender's head to Pines, who beat MAC Hermann Trophy finalist Andrew Gutman to the ball right in front of Muse.
The Terrapin defense continued its strong play in the final 10 minutes, keeping Indiana out of the net and earning its fourth-consecutive shutout. Maryland has yet to allow a goal in four NCAA Tournament matches. Maryland is 8-1-1 in its last 10 matches after starting the season 4-5-3.
"We are like brothers," Pines said after the match. "We fight for each other and play for each other. Every day we're working hard and I feel like since the Denver game we told ourselves that we needed to focus on what we had to do to get to the point we're at right now."
Maryland was the first side to score in Indiana in nearly a month. Prior to Friday's contest, the Hoosier defense held opponents scoreless since these same two teams met in the Big Ten Semifinals on Nov. 9. Maryland has scored in a 11 straight matches.
This will be Maryland's first national championship appearance since 2013. Kickoff from Harder Stadium on Sunday is scheduled for 8 p.m. (ET). Fans can watch the match on ESPNU.
