COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Seniors
Linnea Gonzales,
Julie Duncan and junior
Kelee Lepage were named Maryland field hockey team captains for the 2018 season this week.
The trio was votes on by their peers after a team vote. All three Terps are new to the captainship role.
Duncan has seen action in 54 games in her Maryland career, notching four goals and two assists.Â
"I am really excited to represent the team this year with my co-captains, Linnea and Kelee," Duncan said. "We have such a talented and diverse group of girls that I am so excited to get the season started and see where this journey takes us."
Gonzales and Lepage were earned Big Ten Preseason honors this week. Gonzales was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2015 and All-Big Ten First Team honors last season. Gonzales is the Terps' second leading returning scorer with 10 goals last season, including three in their NCAA Tournament run to the national championship game.
"It is an honor and a privilege to be able to lead this group of girls alongside Julie and Kelee," Gonzales said. "Our team has been through so much together already, and we are ready to see where our potential can go through the hard work we all will put in. Every person on this team has their own individual strengths that they bring to the team. When we work in unison and help each other, our energy is contagious. Excited for the opportunity with this year's group of girls."
Lepage started in 12 of 22 games as a sophomore last year. She scored one goal in a game at Michigan State and notched three assists.
"I am honored to be named captain along side Julie and Linnea," Lepage said. "We have an exciting season ahead of us, and I know the Terps are ready for a fearless four months together."
