COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland Class of 2022 kicked off its first semester in College Park at Maryland Stadium Saturday night as Maryland Athletics along with Department of Resident Life presented "Welcome to the B1G Show".
The event marked the official kickoff to the athletics season at Maryland. The program featured instructions of athletic traditions, which included learning the Maryland Victory Song and Alma Mater, taking part in the flag drop down the student section and getting a sneak peak of the Maryland football entrance video for the 2018-19 season.
The students also received Maryland football posters and schedule cards, took photos with Testudo and entered a Maryland Athletics photo booth.
Maryland Director of Athletics Damon Evans and interim head football coach Matt Canada also addressed the crowd.
"This will be an exciting year for you and we need your support," Evans said. "Where you're sitting now is where I expect to see you during games. Get out and show your pride and enthusiasm for athletics. Without you, none of this would be possible."
Canada added, "Your role in our season will be very important. We're excited to play football and we hope you're here and watching us. These are a great group of young men who have been through a lot and are working very hard."
The class also heard from football players and fellow freshmen Chigoziem Okonkwo and Jeshaun Jones, who shared their excitement for the upcoming season.
After a t-shirt toss, the program was capped off with a Class of 2022 photo on the field at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium in the shape of an "M."
