CONWAY, S.C. – The Maryland men's soccer team put together its most complete performance of the season in a 3-1 win over No. 18 Coastal Carolina at CCU Soccer Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Terrapins (4-3-2, 2-1-0 Big Ten) were the better team throughout the contest, outshooting the Chanticleers 19-8 with 11 shots on goal. Maryland's three goals all came in the second half, with William James Herve, Justin Gielen and Sebastian Elney netting for the road side.
"This was probably our best overall performance," Maryland head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "It's a signature win for us. We were on the front foot the whole game. We played a complete game and I thought we were more threatening than we've been all year. It was a terrific win. I couldn't be more proud of the way the team played."
Maryland was in control from the start, notching three decent chances in the opening minutes. Freshman Vinicius Lansade tried a left-footed effort from just outside the 18-yard box that went wide.
In the 35th minute, Gielen almost poked in a cross that came in from the left win, but his effort was saved. A couple minutes later, a pretty passing move ended with an Amar Sejdic shot that was tipped wide.
The Terps opened the scoring in the 53rd minute. Andrew Samuels played in Paul Bin down the right wing before the junior crossed to Herve, who slotted the ball home from 10 yards out. Herve has a goal or an assist in Maryland's last four matches.
Coastal tied the game just 30 seconds later through Jeranimo Power. Bin then missed a golden chance in the 65th minute as the junior got free in the box, but shot just outside the post.
Gielen tallied the game winner in the 78th minute. Eric Matzelevich delivered a pin point cross to Gielen who easily finished for the first goal of his career. Bin found Elney in the box two minutes last and the senior made it three with the first goal of his season.
Coastal's goal was it's only shot on target for the match as the Terps backline stifled the home team's offense.
Maryland returns to action Friday night as No. 5 Michigan State travels to Ludwig Field. The Terps and Spartans will kickoff at 7 p.m. and the action will be broadcast on BTN.
