WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Despite 79 yards rushing and a touchdown from RB Javon Leake, the Maryland football team (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten) was topped by Purdue (2-4, 1-2 Big Ten), 40-14 on Saturday afternoon.
Maryland scored two touchdowns in the first half, one off a Leake 21-yard run and another by a career-long 61-yard spurt by QB Tyrrell Pigrome, Maryland's third touchdown rush of over 60 yards this season, the most in the Big Ten. Pigrome's 107 yards rushing are the most by a Maryland quarterback since Perry Hills ran for 170 at Ohio State in 2015.
LB Ayinde Eley led the Terps defensively with 11 tackles including a career-best eight solo stops. LB Keandre Jones recorded two tackles for loss and a sack, his sixth-straight game with a stop in the backfield. Jones also recovered a fumble, forced by LB Chance Campbell, giving Maryland their 18th-straight game with a takeaway, the second-longest streak in the country, trailing only Mississippi State.
WR Dontay Demus Jr. had his second 100-yard game of the season with 105 yards on a career-high 10 receptions, the first Maryland receiver with two 100-yard games in a season since DJ Moore had three in 2017.
Maryland will return home next weekend, Saturday, October 19 to host Indiana. The Terps and Hoosiers will kick off at 3:30 p.m. at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium.
