CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Maryland wrestling team split its season-opening duals at the Cavalier Duals on Saturday in Charlottesville, Virginia. Maryland opened the day with a 42-6 win over Southern Virginia, the program's first win in a season-opener since defeating Johns Hopkins 49-0 on November 2, 2014 and Maryland's largest margin of victory since defeating Davidson 4-3 on November 1, 2015.

In Maryland's season-opener vs. Southern Virginia, Head Coach Alex Clemsen earned his first win as a head coach, King Sandoval won in his dual debut, Hunter Baxter earned his first dual win and got his first pin in a dual match. Michael Doetsch and Jahi Jones also notched their first wins by fall in a dual match, while Kyle Cochran earned his second-career tech. fall victory. 

The morning dual started off with a forfeit at 125, getting the Terps on the board with six points right away. Maryland then rattled off seven consecutive wins, all of them in convincing fashion. In his first dual match, Sandoval won by major decison, then Hunter Baxter, Michael Doetsch, and Jahi Jones followed it up with back-to-back-to-back pins.

Kyle Cochran was locked into a competitive match before taking over and dominating late, earning his second-career tech. fall victory. Josh Ugalde was also in a tight match before taking over and earning a 12-5 decision, then Jasenski pinned Southern Virginia's Matthew Rohrdanz in 3:32.

In the second dual of the day, #24 Virginia defeated Maryland 34-6. Michael Doetsch and Kyle Jasenski earned wins, though several other Terps were in highly competitive matches. Four Virginia wins were decided by two or fewer points, while both of Maryland's wins came in overtime periods.

The second ranked 125er in the country in Virginia's Jack Mueller earned a win by fall in the first bout over Jarod Kosman, quickly asserting his dominance and showing off Virginia's strengths. Sandoval then lost via major dec. to Louie Hayes and Hunter Baxter dropped a tight 2-0 decision before Doetsch earned Maryland's first win over the Cavaliers.

The next four bouts were all highly competitive and decided by two or fewer points. Jahi Jones lost 7-6, Kyle Cochran lost 6-4, Josh Ugalde lost 3-1, and Kyle Jasenski earned a 6-4 sudden victory in the first overtime period. Niko Cappello and Parker Robinson were both pinned to close out the day.
