BLACKSBURG, Va. – Philip Spadafora finished as the runner-up at the 174-pound weight class and led a strong day for the Maryland wrestling team at the Southeast Open on Sunday.
Philip Spadafora's second-place finish featured two pins and a decision victory to advance to the final bout, ultimately dropping a 12-2 major decision to Missouri's Connor Flynn.
P. Spadafora was one of five Terps to end the day on the podium. Jonathan Spadafora and Kevin Makosy each finished third at 165 and 197 pounds, respectively, while Ryan Garlitz finished fourth at 149 and Danny Bertoni placed fifth at 141.
Bertoni dropped a 3-1 decision in his opening bout before working his way all the way through the consolation bracket for a fifth-place finish by way of three forfeits, one decision and a major decision.
J. Spadafora opened with a major decision and back-to-back decisions, dropping his quarterfinal bout but winning the third-place bout over Campbell's Jack Ervien with a 8-2 decision.
Makosy won his opening bout, winning 15-0 via tech. fall over VMI's Solomon Harris. He dropped his next bout before advancing through the consolation bracket, winning in the third-place match over Gardner-Webb's Jack Trautman with a 11-5 decision.
Garlitz pinned VMI's Seth Fillers in 2:06 in his opening bout, then advancing via a major decision before dropping the quarterfinal match and losing in the third-place bout to finish fourth at 149 in the freshman/sophomore class.
Maryland will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 9, traveling to Washington, D.C. for the American University Round Robin. For full results from the Southeast Open, see below.
