UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Anthony Cowan Jr. scored a game-high 16 points but it was not enough to overcome 20 turnovers as fourth-ranked Maryland (10-1, 1-1) dropped its first game of the season to Penn State 76-69.
Lamar Stevens and Mike Watkins led the way for Penn State, each scoring 15 points apiece. Â
Eric Ayala (15), Aaron Wiggins (13) and Jalen Smith (12) all finished in double figures, as the Terps staged a comeback attempt after trailing by 10 points at half. Maryland managed to cut the deficit to two at the 10:14 mark after Cowan got a three to fall to make it 52-50. But, the Nitany Lions (8-2, 1-1), regained control with a 6-0 run.
Maryland would hang around, staying within striking distance thanks to a solid free throw shooting night (23-of-28). But, a drought from the field would ultimately keep the game out of reach, as the Terps managed just three field goals in the final 7:22 of regulation.
Maryland will have a week off from competition before heading back on the road to face 22nd ranked Seton Hall on December 19. Tip off in Newark, N.J. is slated for 7:00 pm and the game will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1.
