Terps Topple Murray State In Extra Innings

TROY, Ala. – A two-RBI double from Anna Kufta in the bottom of the eighth sealed the deal for Maryland in their last game of the Trojan Classic, and the Terps will return home with a win and a 2-3 record.

Sydney Golden was phenomenal in the circle all game for the Terps, pitching a complete game and only allowing one earned run, helping the team extend the game into extras and ultimately getting her first win of the season.

Gracie Voulgaris had the hot bat today, going 3-3 at the plate, singling in the third, hitting a clutch RBI-single in the fifth, and singling once more in the seventh.

Both teams got off to a quiet start as Maryland and Murray State's batters went six up, six down to start the game, but the Racers got on the board first with a run in the third. Pitching was the name of the game as the Terps couldn't get too much going against the Racers' freshman pitcher Hannah James, but Murray State faced the same problem against Golden.

The Terps looked to walk it off in the bottom of the seventh but stranded Voulgaris on first and extended the game into extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Golden's arm stayed hot and dealt a strikeout to retire the Racers in order and end the inning with a strikeout.

In the bottom of the eighth, Taylor Wilson pinch hit for JoJo McRae and dropped one behind short for a single, then Regan Kerr singled and put McRae (who reentered for Wilson) in scoring position on third base. With two outs, Kufta sent a fly ball to the warning track that looked like it would be the game-ending out, but the Murray State outfielder bobbled and dropped the ball, allowing Kerr and McRae to score and give Maryland the walk-off victory.

The Terps return to the diamond next weekend at the Houston Classic, facing Nicholls State on Friday, Feb. 15 for their first game of the tournament.
