COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland baseball team gave up just three runs over 18 innings and swept a Friday doubleheader against Maine at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
The Terrapins (4-3) never trailed against the Black Bears (0-6) and took the lead in the first inning of both contests. Senior Taylor Wright had three hits over the two games to lead Maryland's offense.
Game One
Senior right-hander Hunter Parsons tossed eight scoreless innings to lead the Terps over Maine, 4-0, in game one. Parsons struck out five while only allowing four hits and a single walk. He at one point retired nine straight Black Bear hitters.
Maryland got on the board in the first when sophomore Randy Bednar hit a solo shot over the batters eye in center field to make it 1-0. In the third, junior Caleb Walls walked before advancing up to second on a Bednar fly out. Wright singled up the middle to bring Walls home and make it a 2-0 game.
The Terps added another run in the fourth on an AJ Lee sac fly that plated Maxwell Costes. Justin Vought scored Maryland's fourth and final run in the fifth, coming around to score from second on a throwing error by the third baseman.
Senior John Murphy replaced Parsons in the final frame and retired the side to secure the win.
Game Two
Redshirt-sophomore Zach Thompson struck out a career high nine and did not walk a batter over six and two thirds to lead the Terps past Maine in the second game of the doubleheader, 5-3.
Thompson worked quickly throughout his outing and retired the minimum in three of his frames in a bounce back start. Costes led the offense with a pair of doubles.
The Terps struck first in the opening inning, with both runs coming with two down. Wright drew a walk before Vought reached on a bunt single. Costes then worked a fantastic at bat before doubling to the right centerfield gap to plate two.
In the third, the Terps picked up another run when Bednar singled, advanced to second on a ground out and then scored after the catcher's throw got away at third on an attempt to steal third.
Alleyne got his first RBI of the year in the sixth, singling home Lee who had originally reached on a walk. Thompson was bounced after Maine scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, but Elliott Zoellner shut the door with a strikeout to end the threat.
The Terps grabbed some insurance on a Pineiro RBI single that plated Vought. Zoellner and Fisher combined to allow a single run in the Maine eighth before junior Nick Turnbull tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up his first save as a Terp.
Maryland will return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. Fans can listen to the action live on the Maryland Baseball Network.
