COLLEGE PARK, Md. – No. 17 ECU jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings and cruised from there in a 9-0 victory over the Maryland baseball team at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium Friday night.
The Terrapins (10-6) never found a breakthrough against the Pirates (13-6), who received a strong performance from left-handed starter Jake Agnos. Agnos stifled the Terps over his six innings of work, scattering six hits and striking out seven to no walks.
The Pirates jumped on Maryland ace Hunter Parsons for a run in the first on a Alec Burleson sac fly. ECU then went for five in the third, with Jake Washer's three-run home run the big swing of the inning.
The Terps threatened at times against Agnos, putting two runners on in the third and the fourth, but could not plate a run. Junior Caleb Walls reached base twice to lead the Terps. ECU added three more runs in the eight off right-hander Sean Heine.
Maryland and ECU will contest game two of their three-game set Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Fans can listen to the action live on the Maryland Baseball Network.
