COLLEGE PARK, Md. – JoJo McRae hit an inside-the-park home run in the opening at-bat for the Terps, but Maryland would ultimately drop its last non-conference matchup of the season, 7-1.
Kiana Carr sent the Cavaliers down in order in the top of the first and McRae's leadoff inside-the-park home run got the Terps started in the bottom half of the frame, but the first inning wasn't the greatest indicator of how the rest of the game would unfold.
Virginia knotted the score at one apiece in the second inning on a sacrifice fly, but the scoring was put on hold in the third and fourth innings as Carr and Virginia's freshman left-hander Clare Zureich pitched solid scoreless frames.
The Cavaliers added to their lead in the fifth as a two-run homer chased Carr and an RBI-double off Victoria Galvan made it 4-1 through five. Virginia added three more runs in the sixth inning on a three-run homer off Sami Main. Maryland's offense got quieter as the game went on and Anna Kufta – who reached on an error – would be the lone baserunner for the rest of the game for the Terps.
Main sent Virginia's batters down in order in the top of the seventh, but the damage had been done and the Terps weren't able to get out of the deficit in the bottom of the seventh.
The Terps finish their non-conference schedule 16-12, the team's best non-conference mark since going 18-12 in non-conference play in 2015.
Maryland opens conference play this weekend with a series against #20/19 Minnesota. Maryland will play Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m.
