COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior right-handed pitcher Hunter Parsons tossed eight shutout innings as the Maryland baseball team defeated Indiana, 2-0, at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium Friday night.
The Terrapins (13-11, 1-0 Big Ten) played runs in the fourth and sixth off Indiana (15-10, 3-1 Big Ten) starter Pauly Milto. Parsons allowed just two hits and walked three to five Ks in his fourth win of the season. The shutout was Maryland's first of a conference opponent at home since April 23, 2016 against Purdue.
"I was able to locate my fastball pretty well," Parsons said. "Didn't have my best stuff the first few innings but once I got in a groove, things started going well."
Parsons retired the first 12 batters of the game before allowing a walk to start the fifth. He allowed just one runner to reach third during his outing. Parsons has now tossed consecutive outings of eight innings and has three such outings for the year.
The Terps' ace was aided by a fantastic defensive performance. In the third, Randy Bednar robbed Grant Richardson of a home run in right field, reaching over the wall to pull back the ball. A batter later, AJ Lee skied and made a full extension grab to take a hit away from Scotty Bradley.
Maryland opened the scoring in the fourth. Sophomore Chris Alleyne hit the first pitch of the inning off the right-centerfield wall for a triple. Alleyne came in to score on Taylor Wright's squeeze bunt down the first base line.
The Terps added to the lead in the sixth. Alleyne led off the frame with a perfect bunt single before heading to third on Wright's single through the right side. After Maxwell Costes walked, Caleb Walls hit a sac fly to left to give Maryland its second run.
Senior right-hander John Murphy entered in the ninth and picked up his fifth save of the year, striking out Elijah Dunham and Cole Barr to end the game. Costes reached base three times on the night to lead the Terps.
"We know how good they are," head coach Rob Vaughn said. "They are a very talented group and tough kids. To me that's a heavyweight matchup. That's what Friday nights are supposed to look like. Hunter didn't blink. We played really good defense behind him and he was tremendous. Really good to start the weekend that way."
The Terrapins and Hoosiers will face off in game two of their three game series Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Action can be heard live on the Maryland Baseball Network,
